NSW New Protective Gear Requirements

If you’re starting your motorcycle journey in New South Wales, understanding the latest rider gear requirements is just as important as learning how to ride. Whether you’re on your Ls, P1s, or P2s, having the right protective gear isn’t just about following the law, it’s about staying safe every time you hit the road.

Here’s a breakdown of the key NSW motorcycle gear requirements every new rider should know before throwing a leg over the bike.

Approved Protective Gloves Are Mandatory

From 1 July 2026, learner and provisional riders (P1 and P2) must wear approved protective gloves when riding.

NSW has introduced a new safety measure for learner and provisional riders, including mandatory protective gloves that meet recognised safety standards. These changes are designed to reduce hand injuries and improve rider protection in crashes. Your gloves must have the EN 13594:2015 certification.

A proper pair of motorcycle gloves should provide:

  • Abrasion resistance

  • Knuckle protection

  • Secure wrist closure

  • Strong grip in wet and dry conditions

For new riders, gloves are quickly becoming a non-negotiable part of everyday riding gear.

High-Visibility Gear for Mandatory for Learner Riders

From 1 July 2026, learner riders must wear an approved high-visibility (hi-vis) vest or jacket when riding. This makes it easier for other road users to see you, reducing the risk of a crash. Your high-vis vest must meet the ISO 20471:2013 certification.

While many experienced riders already wear brighter gear for safety, these rules place additional focus on helping learner riders stand out in traffic.

Approved Motorcycle Helmets Are Mandatory

Every rider in NSW must wear an approved motorcycle helmet whenever riding on public roads. Your helmet needs to meet the recognised Australian safety standards and be securely fastened at all times.

A quality helmet is your most important piece of riding gear. Full-face helmets remain the most popular option thanks to their superior protection from impacts, debris, and weather conditions.

Jackets, Pants & Riding Boots Matter

Although helmets, gloves and vests are legally required, experienced riders know proper motorcycle protection goes far beyond that.

Wearing motorcycle specific jackets, riding pants, and boots can dramatically reduce injuries during a fall or slide. Abrasion resistant materials, armour inserts, reinforced stitching, and ankle support all play a major role in rider safety.

Many NSW rider training providers strongly encourage “All The Gear, All The Time”, often referred to as ATGATT in the riding community.
